The SAGA Cohort study is a unique nationwide Icelandic study on the impact of trauma on women‘s physical and mental health, including ADHD and cardiometabolic disorders. The SAGA Cohort is conducted by the TIMESPAN partner at the University of Iceland.
The SAGA Cohort study was first administered in 2018 when all adult women residing in Iceland were invited to participate in the study. Approximately 30% of the Icelandic female population participated in the study. A second data collection was administered in 2024 and included follow-up questions on mental health, including an ADHD symptom screening questionnaire, and physical health, including cardiometabolic disorders. Follow-up of medication use and clinically confirmed medical conditions is achieved through record linkage of the SAGA Cohort to the nationwide health registers.
The TIMESPAN funded study on ADHD and cardiometabolic conditions using data from the SAGA Cohort study was published in 2023. See here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37981673/
The SAGA cohort study team is currently involved in a multi-national project with TIMESPAN exploring depression and anxiety in adults with cardiometabolic conditions with and without ADHD or high levels of ADHD symptoms.
