The Lancet Psychiatry Series on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) represents a groundbreaking milestone in the field of mental health. As the first-ever Lancet Psychiatry Series dedicated to ADHD, it brings together the latest evidence, clinical expertise, and policy recommendations to improve the lives of individuals with ADHD worldwide. This initiative marks a transformative step toward addressing ADHD as a global public health priority, with a focus on inclusion, equity, and actionable solutions.
A Global Collaboration for ADHD
Led by co-chairs Professor David Coghill (Melbourne), Professor Luis A. Rohde (Brazil), and Professor Patrick Ip (Hong Kong), the Series unites leading experts from 11 countries and regions. These experts bring diverse perspectives from academia, clinical practice, health economics, and patient advocacy. Notably, the Series includes a significant number of researchers and clinicians from low- and middle-income countries, ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard.
This global collaboration aligns with The Lancet Psychiatry’s mission to drive impactful change in healthcare policy and practice. By leveraging expertise from multiple fields, the Series aims to create a holistic and multidimensional approach to ADHD care, addressing disparities and improving outcomes for individuals across all regions.
A Holistic Approach to ADHD
ADHD is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, with well-documented evidence in many developed countries. However, gaps in research, diagnosis, and treatment persist, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The Lancet Psychiatry Series on ADHD seeks to bridge these gaps by focusing on four key interconnected areas, each supported by dedicated working groups:
- Global Epidemiology: Critical examination of ADHD’s prevalence and impact worldwide.
- Long-Term Societal Implications: Evaluation of long-term clinical, societal, economic, and political costs of ADHD across the lifespan.
- Barriers to Care: Identification of obstacles to equitable access to services and interventions, particularly in underserved regions.
- Education and Advocacy: Promotion of public awareness and training for healthcare professionals to reduce stigma and improve support systems.
A Milestone for Global Mental Health
The Series emphasises the need for a comprehensive approach to ADHD care—one that goes beyond symptom management to address the broader social, economic, and political dimensions of the condition. The launch of the Lancet Psychiatry Series on ADHD marks a pivotal moment in the global mental health landscape. It challenges us to rethink how we view ADHD, moving beyond stereotypes to recognise the strengths and potential of individuals with this condition. By highlighting the latest research and advocating for a more compassionate and inclusive approach, the Series paves the way for a brighter future for individuals with ADHD.
